The health care professionals use various communication skills for effectively communicating with service users, colleagues, and different stakeholders in the social care sector as part of their routine activities. The communication skills involve the use of verbal as well as the non-verbal communications. The verbal communication skills include speaking, listening and perceiving the messages. The non-verbal communication includes the following skills which can lead to quite subjective perceptions:

As mentioned above, the verbal communication takes place between the speakers and the listeners and the effectiveness of the communication depends upon the speaking abilities of the person and the perception of the listeners. The care providers need to be effective verbal communicators in order to understand the problems of service users, coordinate with the team, provide support when needed, counter and eliminate bad news and become an effective problem solver. The verbal communication acts like the nervous system of the health and social care. The verbal communication is always a two-way process involving speakers and the listeners. Listening is the hardest part of the verbal communication, and most of the distortion takes place during the listening process as it requires more skills than merely waiting for the speaker to stop talking.
The scope of non-verbal communication is rather wide and there are numerous forms of non-verbal communication. The dominating form of non-verbal communication is known as the body language. This is so-called body language because people use different postures of the body and behaviour to convey some message. For example, the attitude, appearance and behaviour of the care worker clearly convey their feelings to the service users and the colleagues. Similarly, the service users may verbally communicate that they are okay, but the care workers can find out whether the user is having pain or feeling uncomfortable by observing the body language. Non-verbal communication is the communication channel which is continuously broadcasting, and it succeeds when verbal communication fails.
Signs, symbols and objects of reference
Sometimes signs and symbols become an effective communication medium when every other modes of communication are no longer effective, and that’s why care organizations equip themselves to communicate using signs and symbols. The signs and symbols use graphical representation to communicate some information. It can be quite effective in communicating with the people who don’t understand English or the speaker’s language. Most often, the items of routine usage like clothes, jewellery or toys provide symbolic representation and convey specific meaning to people. For example, the cuddly toys are considered as the symbolic representation for safety and comfort for the child. Similarly, the photographs are the ultimate treasures for the elderly as they remind the special moments of their lives with their friends and family. The teachers use these objects of reference to interact with the people suffering with learning disabilities.
The human aids mainly include interpretation service providers such as the language translators who translate the verbal or written language into the second language to which the listeners or readers are comfortable and can effectively understand. Besides the language translators, singers help in interpreting sign languages such as Makaton or the British Sign Language.
Alternative forms of communication
The alternative forms of communication are used when the conventional methods fail to provide the right medium of communication. The Braille system used by the people suffering from visual disability is one such example of alternative communication methods. The visually impaired people use the senses of their touch to read the documents. The Braille system uses a special stylus for creating a series of indentations on the papers and different combinations of these indentations represent the letters. Similarly, the lip reading and sign language are the mode of communication for the people suffering from hearing disabilities. The sign language or dactylography uses finger signs for conveying messages. (British Sign Language and Makaton) The health and social care organizations use a wide range of graphical symbol and signs to indicate directions, health and safety hazards and other useful information so that people can read these signs regardless of their ability to understand the English language.
