People with dementia experience different levels of fluctuating abilities and needs. It is therefore important that carers understand the different range of techniques that can be used to meet these varying needs.
Know the person
By having a background knowledge of the person ,including knowing the person’s previous life and history one would be able to understand why the person behaves in certain ways, hence be able to design the care and support to meet the person specific needs .For example a person who had fallen from a height in the past might become traumatised with stairs,lifts, which could account for the person’s agitation and screaming when on lift or stairs.
Stable and Familiar Environment
One known trigger for agitation and confusing, for people with dementia is when their daily routine and environment are constantly changing. This can cause distress for them .It is thus important that people with dementia have consistent staff to follow their daily routine.It is also important that they live in a stable ,constant and familiar environment.
Provide specific support
People with dementia have been known to wonder, be agitated , have incontinence, be paranoid and show repeated actions and speeches.Dementaia patient can wonder about within the environment often mainly because they are bored and thus wanting to escape from the environment. This can put the person at risk of accident . It is important that they are engage in physical activities to reduce the incident of wandering.
Sleeplessness,crowd and noise level can bring stress for dementia patients, which can lead to agitation which may trigger other factors such as fear,tiredness. Reducing noise level , the intake of caffeine and other triggers can help maintain the person routine and reduce stress.
Dementia patient can forget the location of bathroom or cannot get there on time. This can make them very uncomfortable meaning they have to wet themselves. It thus important that incontinenece pads are provided to keep them clean and prevent unnecessary frustration.
Language difficulties, rambling or nonsense speech difficulty understanding speech is common for people with dementia. Which means they have to repeat words over and over which can lead to frustration,fear,agitation and increase stress level. It is essential that carers familiarise themselves with strategies that could remind their patient of routine , and also strategies to assist with effective communication with them. It also important that carers should demonstrate high level of patience whilst interacting with dementia patient.
